Install Android 4.4 KitKat on Nexus 10 with CyanogenMod 11 ROM
Google's eagerly awaited next-generation mobile operating system, Android 4.4 KitKat, has been in the spotlight ever since the company announced its release for its Nexus line of devices including Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 (2012 and 2013 models) and Nexus 10.
Incidentally, Nexus 4 was the first device to enjoy the new platform upgrade for Android via AOSP custom firmware, as the Android 4.4 update is still officially unavailable. Following the AOSP port from Nexus 5 to older Nexus devices (Nexus 4 and Nexus 7), third-party developers are actively working on unleashing a stable build of Android 4.4 KitKat via the highly-regarded CyanogenMod 11 (CM11) ROM.
Nexus 4 recently received another custom Android 4.4 update via CM11 ROM. Nexus 10 is the latest to port custom variant of Android 4.4 KitKat, thanks to the release of CyanogenMod 11 alpha build by the CM team.
According to XDA Developers member holtr94, the CM11 ROM for KitKat has been tested to be booting fine as well as fully functional (with no broken features). Furthermore, it is reported that the Android 4.4 Launcher and settings look a bit weird, as it failed to retain the original tablet layout.
Android 4.4 KitKat Based CM11 ROM Details
  • Android 4.4 Launcher is still under development and hence you may use third-party launchers such as Nova, Apex, Aviate... etc., until the final build is rolled out.
  • Google Now is currently disabled by default. So, you should manually enable it via Menu > Google Settings and then use toggle to switch it ON.
  • The CM11 ROM for Nexus 10 can be installed only via ClockworkMod (CWM) recovery as TWRP is not working due to a technical glitch with Android 4.4.
IBTimes UK reminds its readers that it will not be held liable for any device damage during or after firmware installation. Users are advised to proceed at their own risk.
Pre-requisites
  • The CyanogenMod 11 ROM and the instructions provided in this guide are limited to Google Nexus 10 model only. Do not attempt this procedure on any other model, as it may inadvertently brick or damage the device. Verify the device model number by navigating to Settings > About Tablet.
  • Back up data and settings using a recommended custom recovery tool, like ClockworkMod (CWM) or TWRP, as it creates a complete image of the existing tablet setup.
  • Verify correct USB drivers for the tablet are installed on the computer (download Nexus 10 USB drivers).
  • Ensure USB debugging mode is enabled on the phone, by navigating to Settings > Developer Options (NOTE:Tap the tablet's Build Number seven times to unlock or reveal the hidden Developer Options under Settings.) Then select the checkbox to enable USB debugging mode under Settings > Developer Options.
  • Make sure the tablet has at least 80% battery charge to prevent unexpected device shutdown (due to battery drain) while installing the ROM.
  • Ensure the device is unlocked (not locked to a specific carrier) and rooted with CWM Recovery or TWRP.
  • If the device is stuck at booting or experiencing boot loop issues, perform Wipe Cache Partition and Wipe Dalvik Cache a few more times before rebooting.
  • Allow newly installed ROM to stabilise for five minutes before you start working on it.
